"I couldn't find anyone with disabilities on TV."
Yutaro Hamada, the blind 'R-1' champion, releases his first essay collection.
Recommended by Hikari Ota of Bakusho Mondai!
"Right now in Japan, this is the only man who can do simple 'manzai.'
Hamada, you probably don't realize it, but I'm always watching you from close by.
Oh, and always check the mirror before you go on stage. You always have boogers."
In the world of television I admired as a child, I couldn't find anyone with disabilities. Yet, I dreamed of becoming a comedian active in variety shows. Simply because I loved comedy—.
Yutaro Hamada, the 16th champion of 'R-1 Grand Prix' and a blind comedian.
His life as a comedian has continued to this day, swaying between "no matter how hard I try, maybe it's impossible" and "I must be funny."
His first essay collection, where he discusses his doubts about the television industry that champions "diversity," the reasons he insists on real-life storytelling, the anxiety-ridden preliminary rounds of award competitions, the confidence he gained from his first titular show, and his thoughts on "teasing"... all from a perspective only Hamada possesses.

I am, after all, a comedian. So I have no intention of talking about "it would be nice if society embraced diversity" or "let's create a society where no one is left behind." |

Column: How I Got Hooked on Sanrio Chapter 2: The Ideal That Emerged Column: Places I Only Go With My Girlfriend Chapter 3: See It How You Want to See It Column: You Can Play Dragon Quest Even If You Can't See Chapter 4: "Seeing" and "Observing"
Chapter 1: No Disabled People to Be Found
If you want to make me a "symbol," go ahead / "I won't recommend you because you can't see" / Disabled people are confined to welfare programs / "Just call them up" is fine / "Lack of know-how" is no excuse / I'll tease you guys too / Drama staff who made continuous efforts / The town-walking program 'Hamada Yutaro's Braille Reading Journey' / The conviction gained from accumulating results: "I can do it" / The challenges revealed by my emergency appearance on 'Mimi no Ana' / I still don't want to give up on television
The day I fell in love with comedy / I'll start comedy when I turn 22 / My first stage performance without any preparation / If I can get this far, it's okay to aim to be a comedian, right? / I was always a struggling student at NSC / My jokes don't need composition or acting / I just want to talk about the truth / My同期 I met at NSC / Even if I didn't get results, this was the only path / Incorporating "being blind" into my material / The discomfort I felt at my first TV comedy competition final / "If it's funny, it'll be properly evaluated" / The day of the 'R-1' final, where I didn't practice once / The studio floor was slippery for my white cane / I had decided "this routine is for today only" / The同期 who took me to the final
The reason I was drawn to Bakusho Mondai's current affairs manzai / There's nothing you shouldn't tease about / The conditions for "you can actually see, right?" teasing to work / Being overly considerate is also funny / Am I not included in "diversity"? / The most hurtful thing is "you're not funny" / "Disability is individuality" is a cold phrase / Ultimately, how you perceive it is up to the viewer / Abandoning "If you're unsure, just laugh"
A stupid kindergarten kid like any other / After the surgery, I couldn't play games anymore / I never liked school life / Comedians can be good for nothing / Until I could say what I wanted to say / I want to believe "I really am funny" / The difference between "seeing" and "observing" I learned from Holmes / What I can do / The moment I feel the most rewarded
